Portugal and Digital Nomads
Due to an attractive combination of high-quality and affordable lifestyle, fast internet, and favourable tax treatment of digital currencies, such as Crypto, Portugal has fast become a mecca for remote workers and digital nomads.
The country is a safe and expat-friendly nation, providing a growing business hub for remote workers and plenty of co-working spaces and not to mention that domestic travel is made easy by a well-developed, cheap, and easily accessible transportation system.
Portugal has also long been a choice destination for digital currency investors due to its zero-tax policy on the asset, meaning investors can buy, sell and hold these assets with no VAT or capital gains taxes payable. Currently, only professional activities paid in crypto are taxed.
In fact, cryptocurrencies have gained so much ground in Portugal that the first property sale, financed entirely by Bitcoin, was completed in May this year; the 3-bedroom property, worth EUR 110k in Braga, northern Portugal, sold for (only!) 3 Bitcoins.
Much like crypto currencies, Portugal is also becoming an increasingly attractive option for the NFT market, another asset not treated as a security and therefore not liable for tax. Consequently, we are seeing more and more companies are either relocating their existing business or looking to set up a new NFT company, in Portugal.
